Our Director

Carol Duvall, frontline director for the Oregon Coast Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, has an extensive history of community theatre experience. Her first stage appearance was at the tender age of 3 and since then, after many years of dance recitals, she has served as musical director and orchestra conductor for 7 musical plays, been stage director for 8 musical plays, and either designed and directed lights, performed in or choreographed 10 other musical productions from Boise, Idaho to Vancouver, Washington and finally, since 1981, in Newport, Oregon. Additionally, she has done choreography for a professional choir; directed 3 church choirs and a handbell choir; directed 3 community choruses; and organized the Newport Swing Choir Festival for 10 years. Her musical education background includes private work in piano, clarinet, voice, dance, and conducting. And, both her mother and brother were professional musicians so she grew up around music and musicians.

Professionally she worked for 20 years as the business manager of a day treatment facility for emotionally handicapped children. She has been retired for 2 years. She and her husband Walt, have 4 children (three of whom are triplets) and 7 grandchildren.

In 1988 she attended a rehearsal of the fledgling, not-yet-chartered Oregon Coast Chorus and found herself as director about 6 months later when the founding director moved to Eugene. She produced the chorus' first full-fledged stage production in December 1989, prior to their charter in May of 1990. Other than a 2 year hiatus to do more theatre, she has been the Chorus director.

The Oregon Coast Chorus is one of the hundreds of small choruses across the world who make up the heart's blood of the Sweet Adeline Organization. They have more requests to perform than they can accommodate and the audiences of Lincoln County know them, support them, and encourage their growth, both in numbers and vocal expertise.

In 2006, they were invited to represent the State of Oregon in the International Festival of States in San Francisco, California. Their tour included a morning workshop with the vocal music professor at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as performances at a Military picnic and at City Hall where the Mayor of San Francisco proclaimed "the 18th of September, 2006, as Oregon Coast Sweet Adelines' Day in San Francisco". A highlight of their California tour came when they were invited to sing at noon in the sanctuary of Sts. Peter and Paul.

This busy chorus has more requests for performances than they can accommodate. They compete regularly at the Sweet Adeline Region #24 Convention and Competition where they have won 2nd and 3rd place small chorus awards. Duvall was awarded the Novice Director Award at the chorus' very first competition in 1990.

Carol has done community vocal workshops and she always does a workshop with the cast when she's the music director prior to any rehearsing.
Duvall says of her chorus, "these ladies work hard toward personal growth in vocal production and performance but the real reward for us all is the tremendous support and affection we have for one another."
